CASTLE Season 5 Episode 18 “The Wild Rover”

We learn more about Detective Ryan before he became the homicide detective, he went undercover as Fenton O’Connell and was friends with the infamous Robert Shannon or Bobby S. for short (Michael Rodrick) to help solve the case of an murdered baker. Things get interesting when Siobhan O‘Doul (Cara Buono) mistakes Ryan for his Irish Mobster alias and kisses him in front of his wife.

As the episode progresses, Ryan slowly transforms into his big bad tough guy Irish mobster persona causing his best friend Esposito to worry, but Ryan does successfully managed to grab the “bible” or the records of all the drug transactions that where down by the mob family. And escapes a scary situation where he confronts Bobby and his number 2, Liam Finch (Brian Letscher). And oh yeah, the wife killed the baker so that the number 2 would become number 1.

My favorite show, Leverage, made episodes about the Irish mobs seem very interesting and when we see that the Irish mob is front and center for the episode, I figured that it would be an interesting one.

The actual murder of the episode was certainly an interesting one, but looking back it wouldn’t be that hard to figure out who did it once you knew it was a frame up job, it left Liam or his wife. Also the corpse looked disgusting one they pulled it out of the cake.

The overall episode had a more serious tone and Ryan was the star, and he did well. When you have good supporting actors that provide comic relief when you need it and when they have their named called for a serious one they really step up. Ryan was faced with many decisions throughout the episode which started from him having trouble dealing with the fact that he might not be fertile, to what looked like a guilty conscience for his old fling when he was working undercover and his dedication to getting the job done. And you got to feel for his wife, who actually is played by the actor’s wife, which is kind of fun. She played her part very well and she is always a fun guest star when she comes.

Esposito also shined a lot in this episode and you could really see who much he cared for his best friend, Ryan and it provided a good emotional pull in the episode and the conclusion when Ryan reveled himself as a cop to the police was made even more fun due to the fact that you could see Esposito was worried and protective of his littler friend.

You can’t have an episode of Castle without some good old Rich Castle hijinks and this one provided some fun to the otherwise serious episode, in the beginning, everyone giving Castle looks for eating a free sample at the bakery after finding a dead body face down in the cake mixer in a newly made cake was very funny, also going back to the conclusion of the capture scene, when Ryan was calling out to all his “crew”, Esposito had his cool entrance, Beckett had her cool entrance, and Castle was freaking out because he didn’t bring his vest and he complained. That made me laugh really loud.

The big shout out to the relationship was that Castle was talking in his sleep and he said 14 times the name Jordon. Beckett kept trying to get Castle to admit who or what that was. And we learn a surprising thing about Castle, and that is because he felt guilty for a thing he pulled off when he was young and at school. His grades were bad and was on the verge of getting kicked out, so he paid off someone to write a paper for him, and the first time he was praised in public for his work, he cheated and felt like a fraud, so he tried to measure up to what everyone’s opinion of him as a writer ever since. Beckett was very understanding of him and helped their relationship evolve because they can trust each other with the things that are really hard for them to share.

Oh yes, Detective Ryan is going to be a father, because his wife is pregnant. I let my inner fan out for a split second as I scream in excitement for only a second.

I miss Alexis and Martha, they were not in this episode either and I am going to assume that they are on a trip, I know that they are not, but it will be my excuse.
